Port Royal Plantation
The bluffs of this plantation are where Captain William Hilton first landed in 1663. And this is where the Union army staged the largest naval battle of the Civil War and established the Hilton Head link of the Southern blockade, effectively cutting off the export of goods to finance the Southern side of the war. Now, Port Royal is all about golf, tennis, water and sun. Within the plantation are three 18-hole golf courses. Planters Row was the site of the Hilton Head Seniors International Golf Tournament and rated one of Golf Reporter Magazine's top 50 courses in the Carolinas. The Robbers Row course was recently redesigned by Pete Dye. Tennis Village, listed by Tennis Magazine as one of the "50 greatest US Tennis Resorts," is right next-door. Also available are boats to rent, a picnic area, restaurants, pools, walking and cycling paths. Gorgeous ocean views, three golf courses, and a rich history characterize Port Royal Plantation. Here, every home and villa is at most a short walk to the beach, and oceanfront estate homes with panoramic vistas soak up the sun in numbered rows from the ocean. |
